Primary stress is attracted to the first syllable of this combining form and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: -philia comb. form, -ac suffix.
Etymology: < -philia comb. form + -ac suffix.A fairly small number of established formations (chiefly with first elements of Greek origin) are found from the late 19th cent.; occasional formations after nouns in -philia , or with English first elements, are not uncommon. Nouns and adjectives in -phile comb. form are more usual.
Forming adjectives and nouns from abstract nouns in -philia comb. form with the senses:
1. (a person) having a tendency towards something (only in haemophiliac adj. at haemophilia n. Derivatives, etc.);
2. having, or relating to, a love or liking for something (frequently of an excessive or abnormal, esp. sexual, nature); a person with such a liking or inclination (as e.g. necrophiliac n. and adj., etc.).
