单词 -philia
释义

-philiacomb. form

Primary stress is attracted to the first syllable of this combining form and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: -phile comb. form, -ia suffix1; Greek -ϕιλία.
Etymology: Partly < -phile comb. form + -ia suffix1, and partly < ancient Greek -ϕιλία, combining form (see below) of ϕιλία friendship, fondness (see philia n.). Compare post-classical Latin -philia , French -philie (1845 or earlier), German -philie . Compare -phily comb. form.Ancient Greek words in -ϕιλία are used to denote friendship of a type characterized by the first element (as in λυκοϕιλία a wolf's friendship, i.e. false friendship, χρηστοϕιλία friendship of good men), or to denote the state of having friends, characterized by the first element (as in ὀλιγοϕιλία fewness of friends, πολυϕιλία abundance of friends). There is an isolated example, as a variant reading, in Hellenistic Greek, of a word in this form denoting ‘love of’ something specified by the first element: χωροϕιλία love of a place or country. Formations are found from the mid 19th cent., occurring earliest in sense 1. The more general use dates from the late 19th cent. It chiefly combines with first elements of Greek origin, but compare canophilia n. at canophilist n. Derivatives, Francophilia n., with first elements of Latin origin, and fuchsinophilia n. at fuchsinophil adj. and n. Derivatives, sudanophilia n..
Forming abstract nouns with the senses:
1. ‘Tendency to’ (as in haemophilia n., spasmophilia n.).
2. ‘Love of or liking for’ (as in Anglophilia n., necrophilia n.), esp. ‘sexual interest in’ (as in paedophilia n.), usually corresponding to an adjective in -phile comb. form, -philic comb. form, -philous comb. form.
3. ‘Relating to the staining of cells with a particular dye’ (as in basophilia n., eosinophilia n. at eosinophil adj. and n. Derivatives, polychromatophilia n.), usually corresponding to an adjective in -phil (see etymological note at -phile comb. form).
