Etymology: < post-classical Latin album Graecum (1545 or earlier) < album dry white excrement of a dog, use as noun (short for stercus album white excrement (15th cent.)) of neuter of classical Latin albus white (see album n.2) + classical Latin Graecum , neuter of Graecus Greek adj.The designation ‘Greek’ may be due to the fact that the substance was mentioned in Greek medical writers such as Galen and Paulus Aegineta.

The dry white excrement of a dog, hyena, or other bone-eating carnivore, esp. when used as an ingredient in medicinal preparations or in dyeing and tanning.
