Etymology: < Latin constrict- participial stem of constringĕre ; compare astrict , restrict . Other forms derived from the same Latin verb are constrain v. (through French), and constringe v.
1. transitive. To draw together as by tightening an encircling string; to make small or narrow (a tube or orifice); to contract, compress.
