Primary stress is retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element and vowels may be reduced accordingly; see e.g. monophane n.
Forms: 1800s– -phan (rare), 1800s– -phane.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin -phanus; Greek -ϕανής.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin -phanus or its etymon ancient Greek -ϕανής (in e.g. διαϕανής diaphane adj.) < ϕαν-, stem of ϕαίνειν to bring to light, cause to appear, show, and of ϕαίνεσθαι to come to light, appear < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit bhā- to shine, to be bright, to appear. Earliest in the 16th cent. via French in diaphane adj. Other formations occur from the 18th cent. In the 19th cent. a small number of formations occur which are after German formations in -phan . Compare -phanous comb. form.
