Etymology: < Latin contrā adverb and preposition; in its origin the ablative case feminine of an obsolete adjective stem *cont(e)r- a comparative < com, con, preposition: compare citrā, extrā, intrā, ultrā, and English af-ter. For the sense compare Old English wið with, against, wiðer- against, equivalent to contra- in compounds, as in wiðer-sæcgan = contrā-dīcere. From philosophical and legal language, the Latin word has passed into a restricted English use.
