Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Swedish lexical item. Etymons: Latin albus , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin albus white (see album n.2) + -ite suffix1, after Swedish albit (J. G. Gahn & J. J. Berzelius 1815, in Afhandlingar i fysik, kemi och mineralogi 4 180).Occasional 19th-cent. examples of the form alvite probably originate in a misspelling or typographical error; compare:1831 tr. Mineralogy.
A sodium-rich plagioclase and an alkali feldspar, typically white or colourless, occurring widely in granitic rocks and also as prismatic crystals, often twinned.Albite is the sodium end member of the plagioclase and alkali feldspar series. Chemical formula: NaAlSi3O8. Crystal system: triclinic.
