Etymology: < the name of Josef (also written Joseph) Albert (1825–86), Bavarian photographer, who invented the process in 1868 + type n., after German Albertotypie, the name of the process and Albertotyp, the picture produced by it (both 1868). Compare also French Albertypie (1874).With the β. forms compare -o- connective and also e.g. daguerreotype n., chromotype n., ferrotype n., etc.

An early form of the collotype process used esp. for reproducing photographs; usually attributive. Also: a print produced by this method.In the Albertype process a sheet of glass coated with a sensitized emulsion is exposed underneath the negative to be printed. The glass is then washed, and inked for use in printing.
