controversev.

Brit. /ˌkɒntrəˈvəːs/, /ˈkɒntrəvəːs/, U.S. /ˌkɑntrəˈvərs/
Forms: late Middle English contrauerse, 1500s–1600s controuerse, 1600s– controverse.
Origin: Of multiple origins. A borrowing from Latin. Apparently also partly a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: Latin contrōversārī ; controversed adj.
Etymology: In early use < classical Latin contrōversārī (deponent) to enter into controversy, dispute < contrōversus (see controversy n.). Compare later controverse n. Later use in senses 2 and 3 apparently reflects reanalysis of controversed adj. as a past participle and the formation of an analogical present stem. Compare slightly earlier controvert v.Compare Middle French, French controverser to discuss, debate (a matter) (1579, in early use in past participle controversé ; apparently unattested from 1700 to 1845). Pronunciation. With the variation of the stress position, compare discussion at controvert v.; N.E.D. (1893) gives the stress on the first syllable.
