Primary stress is attracted to the first syllable of this combining form and vowels may be reduced accordingly; see e.g.

Etymology:  <  ancient Greek -ϕαγία eating (in e.g. πολυϕαγία  polyphagia n.)  <  -ϕάγος   (see -phagous comb. form) + -ία  -ia suffix1. Compare French -phagie   (formations in which are found from at least the late 19th cent.). Compare -phagy comb. form.Combining with first elements ultimately of Greek origin. Attested from the late 17th cent. in adaptations from Greek, as polyphagia n.
