Primary stress is retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element and vowels may be reduced accordingly; see e.g. macrophage n.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin -phagus; Greek -ϕάγος.
Etymology: < classical Latin -phagus or its etymon ancient Greek -ϕάγος (see -phagous comb. form). Compare French -phage (formations in which are found from at least the beginning of the 19th cent.).Combining chiefly with first elements of Greek origin, although compare vitellophag n. at vitello- comb. form , with a first element of Latin origin. Earliest attested in polyphage n., sarcophage n., both loans from Greek. Formations are found from the 19th cent.
