Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin cōnservātrīx.
Etymology: < classical Latin cōnservātrīx female preserver, protectress, used occasionally with the names of goddesses but usually with feminine nouns personified, as e.g. fortūna cōnservātrīx fortune the protectress, feminine form corresponding to cōnservātor < cōnservāt- , past participial stem of cōnservāre conserve v. + -trīx -trix suffix. Compare conservatrice n.
Now rare.
A female preserver.Frequently in personifications (see the etymology).In quot. c1450: the Virgin as protectress.
