单词 cook islander
释义

Cook Islandern.

Brit. /ˈkʊk ˌʌɪləndə/, U.S. /ˌkʊk ˈaɪləndər/, New Zealand English /ˌkʊk ˈɑeləndə/
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Cook Islands , -er suffix1.
Etymology: < the singular of Cook Islands, the name of a group of islands in the South Pacific + -er suffix1, after islander n.; the use of the singular for the base element is typical of derivatives formed on plural nouns. The islands take their name from Captain James Cook (1728–79), British navigator and explorer, who visited them in 1773 and 1777; however, the name is not recorded earlier than 1824 in the Atlas de l'océan Pacifique of the Russian navigator Krusenstern. The Cook Islands became a British protectorate in 1888, were formally included within the boundaries of the Colony of New Zealand in 1901, and since 1965 have been a self-governing territory in free association with New Zealand.
A native or inhabitant of the Cook Islands.
