Compare French -pénie (formations in which are found from at least the end of the 19th cent.), German -penie (formations in which are found from at least the early 20th cent.).Found in a small number of English formations and adaptations of foreign words from the end of the 19th cent., apparently earliest in leucopenia n. at leuco- comb. form 1. Chiefly combining with first elements of Greek origin, although compare granulocytopenia n., neutropenia n.
