Primary stress is attracted to the first syllable of this combining form and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Forms: 1800s– -penia, 1900s– -poenia (irregular).
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek πενία.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πενία poverty, need < πένεσθαι to labour, of uncertain origin + -ία -ia suffix1. Compare French -pénie (formations in which are found from at least the end of the 19th cent.), German -penie (formations in which are found from at least the early 20th cent.).Found in a small number of English formations and adaptations of foreign words from the end of the 19th cent., apparently earliest in leucopenia n. at leuco- comb. form 1. Chiefly combining with first elements of Greek origin, although compare granulocytopenia n., neutropenia n.
Medicine.
Forming nouns denoting deficiency, esp. of a constituent of the blood, as in granulocytopenia n., pancytopenia n.

1971 Lancet 10 July 108/1 May I add -penia to the list of alternatives to hypo- suggested by Dr. Ell? In Greek it meant ‘poverty’ and it is currently used in such words as granulocytopenia and thrombocytopenia.
