a. Enrolled or elected as a member of the ancient Roman senate. In later use also occasionally: enrolled or elected as a member of the Venetian senate. Usually in conscript fathers, †fathers conscript (also with capital initials) [after classical Latin patres conscrīptī, properly patres, conscrīptī, i.e. patres et conscrīptī fathers and elect; compare Middle French peres conscrips (mid 14th cent.)] : (a title of respect for) Roman or Venetian senators collectively. Cf. father n. 5a. historical.
