Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French agriotte.
Etymology: < French †agriotte (c1450 in Middle French; 1523 (with metanalysis) as griotte , now the usual form) < Old Occitan agriota (13th cent.; also 1523 as agriote ) < agre sharp, sour (see eager adj.) + -ota , feminine form of -ot , diminutive suffix (see -ot suffix).
Now rare.
The sour fruit of a Eurasian cherry, probably a variety of the morello cherry, Prunus cerasus. Also: the wood of this tree or that of the related Eurasian wild cherry, Prunus mahaleb, used esp. to make the stems for tobacco pipes; either of these trees themselves.
