Etymology: < scientific Latin Agrion, former genus name ( J. C. Fabricius Systema entomologiæ (1775) 425) < ancient Greek ἄγριον , neuter of ἄγριος wild, savage (see agriology n.).

Any of various large damselflies of the former genus Agrion, which have a body with a bright metallic sheen and (in the males) forewings that typically have dark bands or patches (also called demoiselle). Also (in form Agrion): the genus itself.The damselflies are now placed in the genus Calopteryx and family Calopterygidae.
