Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin contemporāneus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin contemporāneus contemporary (2nd cent. a.d. in Aulus Gellius; < con- con- prefix + tempor- , tempus time (see tempo n.1) + -āneus (see -aneous suffix); compare post-classical Latin temporāneus timely: see temporaneous adj.) + -ous suffix. Compare earlier contemporan adj., contemporanean adj., and also earlier contemporal adj.The β. forms show remodelling after co- prefix.
