Attested from the 17th cent. in idiopathic adj. The next group of formations, from the early 19th cent., relate to kinds of medical treatment, and are probably modelled on French or German forms (e.g. allopathic adj., homoeopathic adj.). Most formations date from the mid 19th cent. or later; 20th-cent. formations are few.
