-atedsuffix
Primary stress is retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element and vowels may be reduced accordingly; see e.g.
sonicated adj.Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: -ate suffix3, -ed suffix1.
Etymology: < -ate suffix3 + -ed suffix1; compare -ate suffix2.Formations are found from the 16th cent., e.g. affectionated adj., cancerated adj., opiniated adj., opinionated adj. In most cases a verb in -ate suffix3 is found slightly later, and it is possible that some apparent formations are in fact formed on the verb, and there is simply a discrepancy in the historical record. In some early cases an earlier verb in Latin or in French may also have acted as a model or analogue.
