Etymology: Apparently < post-classical Latin contemperantia intermixture (9th cent. in a British source; also in continental sources), due measure (13th cent. in a British source), temperance, moderation (1606, in another work by Du Chesne, or earlier) < classical Latin contemperant- , present participial stem of contemperāre contemper v. + -ia -y suffix3; compare -ance suffix.Compare Middle French contemperance good regulation of temperature (1547).
Obsolete. rare.
The quality of being well-balanced, or of having elements blended in due proportion.
