Etymology: Originally < contemnand, contempnand, contempnant, Older Scots variant forms (compare -and suffix1 and -ant suffix2) of the present participle of contemn v. + -ly suffix2. In later use also < contemning adj. + -ly suffix2.
Originally Scottish. Now rare.
In a manner which displays or expresses contempt; contemptuously. Sometimes (and in earliest use) in legal contexts: in a manner which shows disrespect for the law or a court of law.
