Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin anthropogonia; Greek ἀνθρωπογονία.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin anthropogonia (1564 or earlier), or its etymon (ii) Hellenistic Greek ἀνθρωπογονία origin of humanity < ancient Greek ἀνθρωπο- anthropo- comb. form + -γονία -gony comb. form. Compare German Anthropogonie (1827 or earlier), French anthropogonie (1832). Compare anthropogeny n. Compare also earlier cosmogony n., with which the word is frequently contrasted.
