Etymology: < German Anthranol (C. T. Liebermann & Topf 1876, in Berichte der Deutsch. Chem. Ges. 9 1202), probably < Anthra- anthra- comb. form + -en -ene comb. form + -ol -ol suffix (compare later enol n.).

Chemistry.

A yellow crystalline compound which is a monohydroxy derivative of anthracene. Cf. anthrol n.Systematic name: 9-hydroxyanthracene; C₁₄H₁₀O. It is the enol counterpart of anthrone, into which it can easily be transformed.
