单词 congo snake
释义

Congo snaken.

Brit. /ˈkɒŋɡəʊ sneɪk/, U.S. /ˈkɑŋɡoʊ ˌsneɪk/
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Congo adj., snake n.
Etymology: Apparently < Congo adj. +snake n., probably originally (in sense 1) as an alteration of conger n.1, perhaps on account of (or reinforced by) the black or dark colour of some adult snakes (compare the discussion of Congo monkey n. at Congo adj. and n. Compounds 1).Sense 2 may have arisen from a traditional misinterpretation of the eel-like salamanders as venomous snakes (compare the discussion at sense 1), on account of an overlap in colour, size, and habitat.
Chiefly U.S. regional (southern).
1. Any of three aquatic salamanders constituting the genus Amphiuma (family Amphiumidae), with long, typically black- or dark-skinned, eel-like bodies, found in the southern United States, and often mistakenly thought to be venomous snakes, esp. moccasin snakes. Now historical. Also called congo eel.
