Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin anthracotherium.
Etymology: < scientific Latin anthracotherium anthracotherium n., with omission of the ending (compare -there comb. form). Compare French anthracothère (1835 or earlier).
Palaeontology.
An extinct artiodactyl ungulate mammal of the group including Anthracotherium (see anthracotherium n.), found in Eurasia, Africa, and North America during the Tertiary period, and thought to be related to hippotamuses and possibly to the ancestors of whales.
