Etymology: < scientific Latin Anthracosaurus Anthracosaurus n., with omission of the ending (compare -saur comb. form). Compare French anthracosaure (1875 or earlier).

Palaeontology.

A member of a group of reptile-like labyrinthodont amphibians of the Carboniferous and early Permian periods, including Anthracosaurus.The formal taxonomic treatment of the group within the early tetrapods has varied, with some writers using Anthracosauria as the name of an order or suborder.
