Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: anthraco- comb. form, -oid suffix.
Etymology: < anthraco- comb. form + -oid suffix. Compare scientific Latin anthracoides (1825 or earlier), French anthracoïde (1833 or earlier). Compare also ancient Greek ἀνθρακώδης, Hellenistic Greek ἀνθρακοειδής, both in sense ‘like, or of the colour of, coal’.
Chiefly Medicine.
Resembling or characteristic of anthrax or the causative bacterium of anthrax ( Bacillus anthracis).
