Originally: a disease of the grapevine and other vines of the genus Vitis characterized by the formation of dark spots and cankers on the leaves, shoots, and berries, and caused by the ascomycete fungus Elsinoe ampelina. In later use also: any of numerous other plant diseases with similar symptoms, caused by other ascomycete and imperfect fungi. Also anthracnose disease.Frequently with distinguishing word denoting the type of plant affected.Formerly also called charbon (see charbon n. 3).
