Etymology: As noun apparently < French congénère (16th cent. Paré), < Latin congener of the same race or kind, < con- together with + gener- (genus) kind; as adjective, perhaps directly < Latin. (Cogener is a rare and needless variant.)

1. A member of the same kind or class with another, or nearly allied to another in character. Const. of or possessive.
