Etymology: < German anthracisch (1830 in the passage translated in quot. 1831, or earlier; ultimately < ancient Greek ἀνθρακ- , ἄνθραξ carbuncle (see anthrax n.) + German -isch -ish suffix¹), with remodelling of the ending after -ic suffix. Compare scientific Latin anthracicus (1783 or earlier), French anthracique (1812 or earlier). Compare anthracoid adj.
