Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin anthos.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin anthos rosemary (from 13th cent. in British sources), flower (from 14th cent. in British sources) < ancient Greek ἄνθος flower, probably < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit andhas shoot of the soma plant, juice of this plant. Compare Middle French, French anthos (c1350; 13th cent. in an isolated attestation in Old French as antos).Various other Indo-European cognates of the Greek word have been suggested, but they are all very uncertain.
Obsolete.
The flower or flowers of rosemary ( Rosmarinus officinalis); (also) the plant itself.
