-osidesuffix
Primary stress is generally retained by the usual stressed syllable of the preceding element (e.g.
ganglioside n.), but is sometimes attracted to the syllable immediately preceding this suffix (e.g.
anthocyanoside n.). Vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: -ose suffix2, -ide suffix.
Etymology: < -ose suffix2 + -ide suffix, after glucoside n., glycoside n.Formations are found from the second half of the 19th cent. The termination continued to be productive in the 20th cent., e.g. in furanoside n., ganglioside n., glucuronoside n., pyranoside n., etc.
