Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin ampelographia; Greek αμπελογραϕια.

Etymology: Originally < post-classical Latin ampelographia or its etymon modern Greek αμπελογραϕια (both 1661 in P. J. Sachs von Lewenhaimb Αμπελογραϕια) < ancient Greek ἄμπελος vine (of unknown origin; perhaps a Mediterranean loanword) + -γραϕία -graphy comb. form.In later use after French ampélographie ( A. P. Odart Ampélographie, ou Traité des cépages les plus estimés dans tous les vignobles de quelque renom (1845)). With the β. forms compare -graphy comb. form.

Originally: the scientific description of the grape Vitis vinifera. In later use: the identification and classification of the cultivated varieties of grape used in winemaking; the enumeration and description of the grape varieties of a particular country, region, etc.; an instance of this.

1996 H. W. Paul Sci., Vine, & Wine in Mod. France i. 24 Foëx and Viala published numerous works on ampelography, including American vines.
