Etymology: < am- (in amino- comb. form) + ox- (in oxy- comb. form²) + -apine, alteration of -epine, suffix denoting a seven-membered ring containing nitrogen (see benzodiazepine n.), after loxapine, the name of an antipsychotic drug of very similar structure (1970).

Pharmacology.

An antidepressant drug of the tricyclic class (see tricyclic adj. 2b).Amoxapine is closely related in structure to the antipsychotic drug loxapine, and shares some of its properties and side effects.Chemical name: 2-chloro-11-(1-piperazinyl)dibenz [b,f] [1,4] oxazepine, C₁₇H₁₆ClN₃O.
