Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French conceptacle; Latin conceptāculum.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French, French conceptacle receptacle (1547; frequently in specific sense ‘vessel or cavity of the body’; apparently last attested in this general sense 1611 in Cotgrave), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin conceptāculum receptacle, in post-classical Latin and scientific Latin also vessel or cavity of the body (1561 in the passage translated in quot. 1576 at sense 1a), follicle (follicle n. 3a: 1736 in Linnaeus, or earlier) < concept- , past participial stem of concipere conceive v. + -culum -cle suffix.With sense 1 compare conceptaculum n. In sense 1a ultimately after ancient Greek κοιλία cœlia n.

a. Anatomy. Originally: a vein or other blood vessel. In later use also: any organ or structure containing fluid; esp. the fetal membranes. Cf. receptacle n. 1. Obsolete.
