Etymology: Middle English conferme-n , < Old French conferme-r < Latin confirmāre to make firm, strengthen, establish, etc., < con- together, altogether + firmāre to strengthen, make fast, < firmus firm adj., fast. In 15th cent. assimilated both in French and English to the Latin spelling. From 14th to 16th centuries confirm and conform were often confused: see note to conform v. and compare conformable adj. and adv., conformation n., conformity n.
