Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: cunnigar n.
Etymology: Probably originally an alteration of cunnigar n., with remodelling of the first part of the word by association with coney n.1 and of the ending after (in the α. forms) garth n.1 and (in the β. forms) earth n.1, although see discussion below. Compare later coney green n., coney grate n., coney yard n. at coney n.1 Compounds 3.With the form cunnyngarthis (see α. forms) perhaps compare arth, Older Scots variant of earth n.1 With the β. forms perhaps compare gerth at garth n.1 Forms. The α. forms are reflected earlier in field names and minor names in the north and east of England; compare le Conyngarth (1381, Goltho, Lincolnshire, now lost), Cunyngarth (1407, North Yorkshire, now lost), le Conyngarth (1421, Osgoldcross, West Yorkshire, now lost), le Conyngarth (1437, Lincoln, now lost). With the β. forms compare the Conyngerth, field name (1463, Essex, now lost).
