释义

alicornn.

Brit. /ˈalᵻkɔːn/, U.S. /ˈæləˌkɔrn/
Forms: 1600s alecorn, 1600s alecorne, 1600s– alicorn.
Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian alicorno.
Etymology: < Italian alicorno unicorn (14th cent.), medicinal substance made from the horn of a unicorn (16th cent.), ultimately showing a variant or alteration of classical Latin ūnicornis unicorn n. (compare discussion of Romance forms at unicorn n.). Compare post-classical Latin alicornus (1551 or earlier).Compare the following earlier attestation of Italian alicorno in English context:1607 E. Topsell Hist. Foure-footed Beastes 712 The Graetians call it [sc. the unicorn] Monokeros,..the Italians Alicorno, Vnicorno, Liocorno, Leocorno.
Now historical.
1. A (mythical) animal supposedly resembling a bull with wavy horns, sometimes used as a heraldic device. In this sense perhaps a misunderstanding of the nature of the animal described by Topsell, which is clearly a unicorn (see quot. 1607 in the etymology).
