1. Designating a type of marriage or formalized romantic relationship proposed in the 1920s, in which the partners do not intend to have children and have no legal responsibilities to one other, and which provides for the divorce or separation of a childless couple by mutual consent without legal hindrance. Chiefly in companionate marriage. Cf. companionate n. Now historical.
