Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Spanish alguazil, alguacil.
Etymology: < Spanish †alguazil (1115; 1075 as †aluazil ; now alguacil) < Arabic al-wazīr < al the + wazīr vizier, minister, officer (see vizier n.) in its specific Spanish Arabic sense ‘minor government official’. Compare post-classical Latin algasullus (14th cent. in a British source), Middle French alguacil (1555 in a source from the Netherlands; French alguazil ), Portuguese aguazil (13th cent. as †aluazijs and †alguazil ; also †algazil (1344), †algosiis (15th cent.)). Compare guazil n. Compare also later alguacil n.
