Etymology: < (i) French alguazil mounted constable acting as an official at a bullfight (1666 in the passage translated in quot. 1670; earlier in more general sense: see alguazil n.), and its etymon (ii) Spanish alguacil, in the same sense (a1515 or earlier as †alguazil), specific use of alguacil alguazil n.In plural form alguaciles after the Spanish plural. O.E.D. (1989) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation /alɡwaˈθiːl/.
