Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French communiqué.
Etymology: < French communiqué, specific use (also in article communiqué (1816 or earlier)) of past participle of communiquer communique v.Use as noun in French is apparently only recorded slightly later in dictionaries of French (1856). Compare the following:1821 M. Wilks Hist. Persecutions Protestants S. France II. viii. 348 ‘We engage to prove, to demonstration, the truth of these assertions in the next number of the journal.’ [Note] The editor of the journal adds, ‘Article communique’. The pledge contained in the last paragraph was never redeemed.1850 Examiner 12 Jan. 23/2 This paragraph appeared on Sunday night in the ‘Patrie’ and the ‘Moniteur du Soir’, in the place where semi-official articles are generally inserted, with the word ‘communiqué’ attached to it, as an indication that it came from the Government.
An official announcement or report; esp. one delivered at the conclusion of a meeting, conference, etc. (now usually one concerned with diplomacy or international relations).
