Etymology: < post-classical Latin algorithmus (15th cent.), alteration of algorismus algorism n., after ancient Greek ἀριθμός number (see arithmetic n.1). Compare French algorithme (1554 in Middle French as algorithme ), German Algorithmus (16th cent.). Compare earlier algorism n.
1. The Arabic system of numbering, characterized by a zero (cf. algorism n. 1; now rare). Formerly also: †calculus (obsolete).
