Etymology: < Latin compunctus, past participle of compungĕre to prick severely, to sting, < com- intensive + pungĕre to prick.
Obsolete.
a. ‘Pricked’ in heart or conscience by consciousness of wrongdoing; affected with compunction. (Usually construed as a participle.)

b. In the Wyclifite version, to be compunct renders the Latin passive compungi, Greek κατανύσσεσθαι, in certain passages, where the Hebrew has forms of dāmam to be dumb or silent. So in Hampole's Comm. on Psalms.
