Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; probably modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Greek ἄλγος , -phobia comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἄλγος pain (see -algia comb. form) + -phobia comb. form, probably after French algophobie (1892 in the passage translated in quot. 1899).
Psychology and Medicine. rare.
Excessive or unreasonable fear of pain.
