Etymology: < German Algolagnie ( A. von Schrenck-Notzing Suggestions-Therapie (1892) iii vii. 125 (compare quot. 1895); < ancient Greek ἄλγος pain (see -algia comb. form) + λαγνεία lust: see below), with remodelling of the ending after -ia suffix¹.Ancient Greek λαγνεία is < λάγνος lustful ( < the stem of λαγαίειν to release (ultimately < the same Indo-European base as slack adj.) + -νος , suffix forming adjectives) + -εία -y suffix³.
