Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin algeticus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin algeticus (1553 or earlier) < Byzantine Greek ἀλγητός ( < ancient Greek ἀλγεῖν to feel pain (see algesia n.) + -τός , suffix forming verbal adjectives) + classical Latin -icus -ic suffix. Compare Greek ἀλγητικός , in scholia (medieval Greek or earlier) on Homer Odyssey 8. 272. Compare German algetisch (1852 or earlier). Compare earlier analgetic adj. Compare also earlier algesia n.
