单词 albarello
释义

albarellon.

Brit. /ˌalbəˈrɛləʊ/, U.S. /ˌælbəˈrɛˌloʊ/
Forms: 1800s– albarello, 1800s– alberello.
Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Italian albarello, alberello.
Etymology: < Italian albarello, †alberello decorated ceramic pharmacy jar of a cylindrical shape with a slight constriction halfway up (1344 as alberello; late 15th cent. as albarello), of uncertain origin.Several suggestions have been made as to the origin of Italian albarello . It has been widely asserted that it shows a transferred use of Italian alberello in the sense ‘(white) poplar’ (1698; < albero (white) poplar (1550; < post-classical Latin albarus white poplar (10th cent.) < classical Latin albus white: see album n.2) + -ello -ello suffix), but the tree name is not attested in Italian until much later than the name of the jar; moreover, this argument is based on the assumption that this kind of vessel was sometimes made of wood, which appears not to be borne out by material evidence. Etymologies involving classical Latin albāris in a sense ‘whitish’ (with allusion to the white or pale colour of the maiolica from which these jars were usually made: see opier n.), and the related classical Latin albārius in a sense ‘of or relating to whitewash’ (with reference to the supposed contents of the vessels) have also been proposed, but present difficulties since both adjectives are recorded only in the sense ‘of or relating to stucco’. For more hypotheses and further discussion see M. Cortelazzo & P. Zolli Diz. etimol. della lingua italiana (ed. 2, 1999) at albarello.
A type of maiolica jar without handles, originally used esp. for the storage of dry herbs and medicines.
