Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element; modelled on a Scottish Gaelic lexical item. Etymons: proper name Albania , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < Alban- (in Albania, a name for Scotland: see Albanian adj.1) + -ic suffix, probably partly after Scottish Gaelic Albannach (see Albanian adj.1). Compare post-classical Latin Albanicus (c1210 in a British source).Compare the following earlier attestations of the similar-looking Scottish Gaelic Albannaich , plural of Albannach , used in English contexts, and also quot. 1701:1610 P. Holland tr. W. Camden Brit. ii. 39 They be commonly termed High-landmen who being in deed the right progeny of the ancient Scots, speake Irish, and call themselues Albinich. Now rare.
